Before You Go

Promise me that before you go you’ll make a sandwich.

Any kind you like.

Put on your favourite tv show or movie,

characters you know and love.

Before you go, wrap yourself in a warm blanket,

one that smells like summer sun and grass.

Place one hand on your cheek,

Where mine would be if I could bend space and time for you.

(I would).

Before you go, write me a note,

let me know where you’ll be.

Feel the paper, smooth, and the pen in your hand

and watch the magic pour from its tip.

Remember all the words I’ve written to you,

and all the words I haven’t yet.

All the words I might.

Before you go, brush the crumbs from your lips

and have a sip of water.

Then if you go you’ll have the strength

to get to the other side.
